Sitting a dream trip under Chris Landeros, Mr Cub stalked two dueling frontrunners and pounced to win the $70,000 Opening Verse Thursday at Churchill Downs. The victory marked the first stakes win of his career.
Bet down to 2-1 favoritism following three stratches in the body of the race, including morning-line favorite Mr. Misunderstood, he completed a mile on a firm turf course in 1:34.69, paying $6.80. He was trained to victory by Ian Wilkes for owner Turf Stable LLC.
First Premio rallied to be second and was gradually cutting into the winner’s lead, but never threatened to catch him. He finished roughly a length and a half behind.
Given how things fell his way in the Opening Verse, I’d be inclined to play against Mr Cub in his next start, particularly if he is well bet.
