Among the scratches at Pimlico on Friday are Hogy and Thewayiam, who would have been solid favorites in their respective races, both of which remain on the turf, which is labeled soft, and judging by the final time of race 4 (1:59.52 for 1 1/16 miles) certainly is.
Hogy would have been favored in the Jim McKay Turf Sprint, race 10. The 9-year-old won the Grade 3 Canadian Turf going a mile for trainer Mike Maker. He would have been shortening up from the one-mile Maker’s 46 Mile to six furlongs in the McKay.
Thewayiam was 3-5 on the morning line for race 12, the Hilltop Stakes, a mile turf stakes for 3-year-old fillies. Thewayiam finished second in the Grade 2 Appalachian at Keeneland in her last start. She was one of three Graham Motion-trained fillies in the Hilltop.
Motion will start both Peach of a Gal and Secret Message.
