Trainer Bret Calhoun and owner Tom Durant are continuing their juvenile-winning ways at Churchill following success at Keeneland with such runners last month. They won their third baby race of the Kentucky spring in the fifth race with second-time starter Shanghai Rain ($21), who stalked and pounced under Gabe Saez to edge favored Blame the Frog by a half-length.
Calhoun and Durant struck in early April with 2-year-olds during the Keeneland meet, winning with first timers Shanghaied Roo and True Saint. Those two winners were the only horses to win baby races at that meet that were NOT trained by Wesley Ward.
Durant is no stranger to winning races for 2-year-olds. He teamed with prior trainer Ronny Werner many years ago to dominate those races at Keeneland before the Ward era of dominance began.
