Imprimis, winner of his first three starts on firm turf at Gulfstream Park earlier this year, showed he could handle bottomless ground as well as shipping to a new course when capturing the $100,000 Jim McKay Turf Sprint on Friday at Pimlico.
Over a course rated soft, Imprimis stalked the pace of the early leader, Rocket Heat, surged past him in upper stretch and drew away to a clear-cut victory by about four lengths.
Rocket Heat held second, by about 1 1/4 lengths over Oak Bluffs. Field of Courage was fourth and Vici last in a field of five. The other five runners entered in the race were withdrawn owing to the soft ground.
Imprimis covered five furlongs in 1:03.81, more than eight seconds off the course record. Rocket Heat set the early pace of 23.56 seconds, while Imprimis was on top after a half in 50.02 seconds.
Imprimis, the favorite, returned $3.60. Irad Ortiz Jr. rode the winner for trainer Joe Orseno, who has had Imprimis for his last two starts. He originally was trained by Tim Hills. Imprimis, 4, now 4 for 4, is a gelding by Broken Vow.
