Red Ruby scored the biggest win of her career on Friday at Pimlico by capturing the Grade 2, $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes for 3-year-old fillies with a dominating performance.
Red Ruby, the 5-2 favorite, stalked pacesetter Coach Rocks through the first seven furlongs of the 1 1/8-mile race, asserted her superiority in upper stretch and drew away under aggressive handling from jockey Paco Lopez to win by 4 3/4 lengths. Coach Rocks safely held second by five lengths over Indy Union, who was along for third in the nine-horse field.
Red Ruby was timed in 1:50.17 for 1 1/8 miles on a track rated sloppy.
Red Ruby, by Tiznow, has now won three times in five starts. Her previous wins included the Midnight Lute Stakes, also on a sloppy track, at Oaklawn in February. She had not raced since finishing fourth in the Honeybee at Oaklawn on March 10.
Kellyn Gorder trains Red Ruby for a partnership that includes her co-breeder, Sandra Sexton.
Colleague David Grening will have a full recap of the race, including quotes from the winning connections, posted in a bit at www.drf.com
