BALTIMORE, Md. - Song of Spring rallied furiously to edge Blue Prize by a half length in the Grade 3, $150,000 Allaire duPont Distaff Stakes on Friday evening at Pimlico, posting a $21 upset and continuing a solid run for her connections.
It was the second stakes victory on the day for jockey Ricardo Santana, Jr., who earlier in the day rode Vertical Oak to win the Skipat Stakes for trainer Steve Asmussen. Song of Spring is trained by Neil Howard, who was winning the duPont for the second time in the last three years, after taking the 2016 edition with Ahh Chocolate. Both Ahh Chocolate and Song of Spring are owned by Stoneway Farm.
This was the first career stakes victory for Song of Spring, a Bernardini filly who finished third in the Grade 3 Doubledogdare Stakes at Keeneland last month.
