Collective Effort ($5.60) ran away from the field in the stretch to record a front-running maiden victory in this 1 1-16-mile turf race where #8 Fair Archer stumbled at the start and jumped the rope that is used as a temporary rail to separare the inner and outer turf courses. Fair Archer was not injured. I'm not sure if it was more surprising that Fair Archer jumped the rope or that he was 5-1. Had run just once, at Saratoga in an off-the-turf race and finished seventh at 14-1.
Collective Effort, who found the winner's circle in his 11th start, was equipped with blinkers for the first time.
The winners of races 4 and 5 were also getting equipment changes. The race 4 winner, Major Force, got blinkers on while Polar City, race 5, had blinkers taken off.
The change-of-equipment pick-3 paid $34.75 for $1.
Manny Franco rode Collective Effort for Ray Handal.
