For the second straight week Gronkowski had a solid workout, going five furlongs in 1:01.87 over the Belmont main track while galloping out a mile in 1:42.28. Jose Ortiz was aboard for the work, which was done over a track rated fast but still had some moisture in it.
He began the work about a half-length in front of Engage (who runs in the Woody Stephens Stakes) and went in splits (on my watch) of 13.57 seconds for his first furlong, 25.90 for the openining quarter and 37.52 for three furlongs. Gronkowski got his last quarter in 24.35 seconds while just a tad late switching leads but finished well and galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.61 and seven eighths in 1:27.71 while pulling up a mile in 1:42.28.
Can't see any reason off this work why Gronkowski wouldn't get the green light to run in the Belmont.
Will update later on drf.com with thoughts from trainer Chad Brown.
