Jockey Tiago Pereira was hospitalized on Saturday afternoon after being involved in a spill in the $200,345 Snow Chief Stakes.
Pereira was taken to a hospital in Pasadena as a precaution, according to track officials.
Pereira was aboard Waya Ed, who clipped heels and fell when racing in tight quarters in the stretch of the race at 1 1-8 miles on turf. Waya Ed suffered a tibia injury and was euthanized, according to track stewards.
The race was won by Take the One O One. Waya Ed and Take the One O One are owned by Samantha Siegel and trained by Brian Koriner.
Siegel, who has a lifelong involvement in the sport through her late parents Mace and Jan, reflected on the race to Santa Anita publicity.
"The highest of highs and the lowest of lows in a fifth of a second," Siegel said. "I don't even know what happened.
"Never had anything like this happen in all the years we've been in racing, except we had a filly win the Landaluce one year at Hollywood Park and she collapsed from heat exhaustion."
Take The One O One won his first stakes in his eighth start in the Snow Chief Stakes, which was the longest race of his career. Last September, Take the One O One was third behind Bolt d'Oro in the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes.
"We know now he can run on both the dirt and turf," Siegel said.
