Tapping Pearl, a 2-year-old homebred daughter of Tapit owned by Stonestreet Farm, was a professional first-out winner of the fourth race at Churchill Downs Friday. Breaking alertly under Florent Geroux, she sped to a clear lead, settled down on the turn, and spurted away for a two-length victory over a nice group of youngsters. She raced six furlongs in 1:11.16 and paid $7.20.
Unlike the winner, Into the South was green and all over the track, and it cost her a runner-up finish. She crossed the wire second, but was disqualified and placed last for darting out at the head of the stretch under Declan Cannon, impeding Lady T N T, who seemed to clip heels.
Her disqualification elevated Merada in the runner-up position, although she was unaffected by Into the South’s antics.
