Though Social Paranoia was sent off the 6-5 favorite, it was the other Todd Pletcher-trainee, Meade, who took the opener for 2-year-olds.
Meade, debuting with blinkers, broke alertly and stalked the pace-setting Twelfthofneverland to the top of the lane. That pair was joined on the outside by Bronxville, a 34-1 longshot. Meade put Bronxville away and drew off while Road Home, a 31-1 shot trained by Bill Mott (Leana Willaford was listed as the trainer while Mott serves out a suspension) rallied widest of all for second. Social Paranoia bobbled slightly at the break and then had to move out a path or two when Bronxville tired in the stretch. Social Paranoia and Larceny got to leaning on each other a bit in the stretch.
Final time for six furlongs was 1:11.30.
Meade is at least the third debut winner this month trained by Pletcher for St. Elias Stable and MeB Racing Stables. At Monmouth, he sent out the filly Nona Madeline. Earlier this week, at Belmont, the filly Virginia Eloise won by five lengths.
