Trainer Craig MacPherson thinks Ace of Diamonds has what it takes to win the Grade 3, $150,000 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park on Aug. 25. To get into the 1 3/8 miles race he first he has to break his maiden. He has a good chance of doing just that in a $50,000 optional maiden claiming race.
He is certainly worth a play if he goes off close to his 7-2 morning-line odd. However, with Richard Hamel riding him for the first time there is a good chance he'll end up favored in the 1 1/16 miles race that drew seven horses.
There are no scratches on the 7-race card that begins at 1:50 p.m. Pacific. The track is fast.
