Limousine Liberal ($5.70) ran down Whitmore to win an eventful running of the Grade 3, $350,000 Belmont Sprint Championship by a neck.
It was 1 3-4 lengths back to Eye Luv Lulu, the pace-setter trained by Jason Servis, in third.
Limousine Liberal, under Jose Ortiz, won despite an incident in upper stretch where Whitmore, under Ricardo Santana Jr., tried to sneak through along the rail but bounced off the rail and into Shaft of Light, who in turn came over on Limousine Liberal, who had to steady briefly.
Whitmore got the outside and was able to haul in Eye Luv Lulu but Limousine Liberal regrouped and kept coming and got up. He covered the seven furlongs in 1:21.53 and returned $5.80
The victory earned Limousine Liberal a fees-paid berth into the Breeders’ Cup Sprint which will be held on Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs.
The stewards posted the inquiry sign to look at the incident at the top of the stretch to see if Whitmore had room or if he was impeded by Shaft of Light. There was no objection lodged by any of the riders and the result stood a 1-2-3-5-6.
