New week begins with the features $100k Shine Again for filly and mare sprinters on the main track. It has pulled a well-matched field of eight, led by ML favorite Your Love for leading trainer Chad Brown. She holds no edge on this field based on any handicapping criteria, but she's certainly okay and she's second off the layoff from a good post.
I sided with Cairenn for Graham Motion while realizing that she is going to need her very best in order to come out on top. She has been racing in very good form dating back to an unlucky run chasing wide over a gold rail track at Aqueduct back in January, and she has acquitted herself well in stakes company in her first two starts for this trainer.
The other horse for me is Come Dancing, wheeling back quickly after returning from a layoff to dominate allowance rivals last week.
Race 3: I'm going to take Brockmoninoff returning from the layoff in this turf sprint NY-bred maiden claimers. He was last seen in September showing good speed in his turf debut vs. a better field, and he stayed gamely in that spot to hold for 2nd while earning a figure that already makes him competitive with what these horses have been running. If he's ready off the bench he can be tough in this spot.
Ferrad's Party ran a faster race last November when just missing at Aqueduct but he may have run the best race of his career last time when rated back off a pace that wasn't at all fast and missing by a head. He is the only other horse I wanted in this race.
Race 4: In a race where I didn't really trust anyone, I'm going to bet Be Counted at a price. He has a long way to go, even against this field, but he is lightly-raced and he has done some good things in his three starts so far. He was game while pushing his way off the inside to prevail in his career debut, and he made a long run from last in a race that was really holding together up front when dropped in class when last seen. There is plenty working against him in this spot, but I don't want to bet anyone else.
Race 6: Another turf sprint for 2yos, this one for NY-bred fillies. Jaded Lady debuted over a sloppy track at Finger Lakes and chased a 2/5 favorite around the track before settling for second-best. She is by a sire who has been fine with his turf sprinters and her dam is a sister to a pair of graded stakes winners on grass. She faces some interesting first-time starters in her turf debut, but she can improve with the surface switch and I thought she ran fine first time out.
Race 10: I like the ML odds pegged for Money Laundering and could bet him assuming things stay around that level. He faded to finish 4th in his first start off the layoff at this level, but he was shut off at the start of that race before going up to chase a fast pace, and the 1-2 finishers came from last and next-to-last to get the money. He also was part of a fast and contested pace in his career debut, and he was a dominant winner in his only other start on dirt after that, over this track with a new top figure.
