Solid favorites and upset candidates, Saturday preview …
Race 1 – Fortnite Dance (8) ran super pressing a fast pace in his fourth-place debut. The 2yo adds blinkers, drops and appears formidable in this $80k maiden-claiming dash.
Race 3 – The turf rails move to 12 feet. When the rails were this setting July 28-29, the course was fair to all running styles. Moonlight Drive (8) is an interesting pace play, stretching out in a race with no speed. He could get brave at 5-1, though a mile and an eighth is a long way. The 6-1 shot Any Questions (1) could get a great trip in second.
Race 4 – The Graduation Stakes for Cal-bred 2-year-olds was won by the favorite three of the last four years. Our Silver Oak (5) is favored based on a visually impressive debut victory last month, while Tap the Wire (4) looked good winning his debut three months ago. Luck’s Royal Flush (2) is the best speed, but the horse he defeated last time out (Leadville) returned to finish ninth as the favorite in a maiden race Friday.
Race 5 – Royal Descendent (3) worked well in blinkers since her runner-up debut; she enters this MSW sprint as a borderline standout. Her dam is multiple graded winner Sweet August Moon, whose only other foal to race won a maiden race second time out. Second preference Tandalicious (5) also worked very well for her first in two months.
Race 6 – In theory, an abundance of speed in this N1X turf sprint bodes well for deep-closing favorite Oiseau de Guerre (6). However, four of the nine turf sprints this summer were won by the pacesetter (two winners were rails down, others 12 and 24 feet). Catfish Hunter (8) and What’sontheagenda (2) are the best front-runners; first-time gelding Little Juanito (5) has won on the course and trained well for his comeback.

Race 9 – Tatters to Riches (1) was a promising 2yo last summer, the million-dollar colt returns from an extended layoff in this N1X sprint. This is not a race that he needs to win, facing highly rated maiden winner Flagstaff (9) who posted two sharp works at Del Mar since his 91-Beyer maiden win. Solid Wager (6) is a legit threat from off the pace.
Race 10 – Tenth time the charm for Zipman (2)? He drops from MSW in-the-money finishes to maiden-62.5k. He should be tough, although turf-route favorites this summer are just 4 for 33.
