Uni ($7.20), despite hitting the side of the gate when the doors opened, rallied from last under Irad Ortiz Jr. to run down Precieuse as trainer Chad Brown finished 1-2 in the $100,000 De La Rose Stakes over the soft inner turf course.
Uni beat Precieuse by a head. It was two length back to Pas de Soucis in third.
Uni was scratched out of the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes at Santa Anita in May due to an illness after she shipped from New York to California.
It appeared as though Irad Ortiz Jr. lost his right iron when Uni hit the gate in the De La Rose.
“She hit the doors pretty bad out of the gate so I don’t want to rush her, after that I go to plan B,” Ortiz told Maggie Wolfendale in the post-race interview.
Uni ran down Precieuse, who was making her first start in 14 months.
Uni, a daughter of More Than Ready owned by Michael Dubb, Head of Plains Partners, Robert La Penta and Bethlehem Stables. She covered the mile in 1:40.09 over the soft turf and returned $7.20 as the second choice.
