After spending more than 40 minutes in the paddock due to a weather delay, Diversify splashed over the sealed and sloppy track to a convincing 3 1/2 length victory over fellow New York bred Mind Your Biscuits to prove a popular winner of the Grade 1, $1.2 million Whitney. Longshot Discreet Lover rallied belatedly to finish a half-length further back in third.
Diversify, winner of the Grade 2 Suburban in similar fashion just four weeks earlier, broke like a shot with jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. hustling him from the outset to take command in the run to the first turn. Diversify set a lively pace, settled into the stretch with a comfortable advantage and was never seriously threatened. Mind Your Biscuits, well placed saving ground from the outset, moved within striking distance advancing wide into the stretch but could not sustain the bid while able to fend off the 38-1 Discreet Lover to finish second. It was another 6 1/4 lengths further back to fourth place finisher Tapwrit.
Diversify is trained by Rick Violette for owners Ralph and Lauren Evans. Violette had originally planned to bypass the Whitney in lieu of the Woodward at the end of the meet. But made the last minute decision to enter Diversify, now a two time Grade 1 winner, on Tuesday morning, just hours before the post position draw. He was also able to secure the services of Diversify's regular rider Ortiz, who was originally scheduled to ride Backyard Heaven in the Whitney.
Diversify, a 5-year-old son of Bellamy Road completed a mile and one eighth in 1:49.62 over the sloppy going and paid $5.20. He also secured a guaranteed, all expenses paid berth in the Breeders' Cup Classic by virtue of his victory in the "Win and You're In" Whitney.
