The local female sprint division has been dominated by Marley's Freedom this year and with her off to Saratoga for her next start, it was a chance for Yuvetsi, drilled twice by Marley's Freedom earlier this year at Santa Anita, to pull off an upset on Sunday in the Grade 3, $100,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap.
Yuvetsi, off at 9-1, went with 2-5 favorite Anonymity from the start, got the best of her turning into the lane and drew off for a 2 1/2-length win.
Both Yuvetsi and Anonymity were coming back just two weeks following their last races. Yuvetsi was a well-beaten fourth going two turns behind Unique Bella in the Clement Hirsch, while Anonymity had won a second-level allowance like she could be a Breeders' Cup player. She didn't have it on Sunday.
Skye Diamonds, the defending race winner, was another four lengths back in third. She still tries, but she's not quite what she was a year ago. She might need California-bred company going forward.
Deer Valley was last in the field of four.
Yuvetsi, whom Tyler Baze rode for trainer John Sadler, was timed in 1:17.22 for 6 1/2 furlongs. The 4-year-old daughter of Bodemeister is owned by Kosta and Pete Hronis.
