Jockey Manny Franco has won with his first three mounts on Wednesday's card, guiding three favorites home first.
He won the opener on Cool As You Like ($5.10), a $16,000 claimer going 6 1-2 furlongs on dirt, the second on Elegant Zip ($3.70), who outdueled Tossup from the quarter pole home to win this maiden affair for New York-bred juvenile fillies. Both Elegant Zip, trained by David Donk, and Tossup, trained by Rick Violette, looke to be promising 2-year-old fillies.
Speaking of race 2, the half-mile fraction of 47.67 seconds is obviously incorrect. Trakus has it as 45.46 (which is closer to accurate) but the official chart will have NA (not available) as the half-mile fraction. Timing races really shouldn't be that hard. Wish track management put more of a premium on getting this right.
Franco did not a have a mount in race 3. He guided Avery Maeve ($4.10) to a convincing victory in an $34,000 claiming turf affair for fillies and mares. The turf course is labeled firm. I would say it's more like good.
Franco, who leapfrogged Jose Ortiz to move into fourth in the rider standings with 21 victories, has four more mounts on today's card (Races 5,6,7 and 10).
