Lets get the caveats out of the way. Race 6, for 2-year-old filly maidens, was rained off turf, and there probably weren't a bevy of future stars running. The Polytrack seems quick today, so the winning time here of 1:45.21 didn't break any watches.
Okay, that said, Carnival Colors, the odds-on favorite for trainer Mike Stidham, still turned heads with this performance. Third going 5 1/2 furlongs over AP Poly in her debut (Craft Show, the winner, was a sharp front-runner who has a good pedigree, and her stock just rose), Carnival Colors dropped to the tail of this field during a rough run into the first turn and sat that for the first five furlongs or so. It seemed notable that her jockey, Mitchell Murrill, looked totally happy being wide and well back - and when he let his filly loose around the far turn, one could see why. Four-wide at the three-furlong pole, Carnival Colors inhaled everyone without being asked, and under a hand ride she drew away to win by about 16 lengths.
Fine looking stride on an athletic-looking horse, a Godolphin homebred by Distorted Humor out of Carnival Court. Carnival Court, by Street Sense, is a half-sister to the great Royal Delta, so there's an excellent pedigree behind this visually impressive maiden winner.
