First post is 4 p.m. on Friday at Del Mar. Preview …
Race 1 – Program favorite Ever So True (1) seems vulnerable in this maiden turf mile, her first since January. Leading trainer Peter Miller wins at all levels, but the past five years he is 1 for 17 with turf-route comebackers off six months. Dearborn (7) worked well since her third-place comeback, Euro import Tig Tog (4) also is working well.
Race 2 – The Mick Ruis stable has five wins from its last 12 starters, although 2-1 favorite El Asesino (4) is no bargain in this $25k claiming N2L sprint. In fact, 2-1 is an underlay. Face of Victory (5) and Psychedelicat (6) figure in this small field.
Race 3 – Phil D’Amato has this N1X turf mile for Cal-breds covered with pace-pressing favorite A Walk in the Park (9) and deep closer Music Babe (2). How has the turf course played with the rails at 12 feet? Six rails-at-12 miles this summer: two won wire to wire, one by a presser, three by deep closers. The course has played fair.
Race 4 – He’s Stylish (3) is a legit favorite in this MSW sprint. He trained super since his highly rated runner-up comeback. He faces fast-working comebacker Montmartre (5), but He’s Stylish really “should” win at a short price.
Race 5 – Can you trust Push Through (10)? His runner-up comeback in a similar Cal-bred maiden turf mile would blow these away. That was three weeks ago, he shows no recorded works since. This race might be more open than it looks.
Race 7 – Pee Wee Reese (7) shortens to five furlongs after setting a blazing pace and tiring in a mile turf stakes race. ’Reese is qualified to upset Tribalist (3) and Stormy Liberal (2) in this turf sprint. Pee Wee Reese sprinted three times on turf – he won them all by margins of two and three-quarter lengths or more.
First post for the eight-race Friday card, 4 p.m. Reminder: Saturday is Pacific Classic day.
