Accelerate continued his domination of California's older male division with a comprehensive win in Saturday's Grade 1 Pacific Classic.
Ridden by Joel Rosario, his fourth win of the day, Accelerate stalked the pace to the three-eighths pole before taking the lead on the turn. He pulled clear without a threat to win the $1 million race by 12 1-2 lengths. Accelerate ran 1 1-4 miles in 2:01.83.
The margin was a record for the Pacific Classic, Del Mar's top annual race for older horses.
Accelerate (2.80) won his third Grade 1 of the year. He won the Santa Anita Handicap in March and the Gold Cup at Santa Anita in May. The Pacific Classic was his first start since the Gold Cup on May 26.
Owned by Pete and Kosta Hronis and trained by John Sadler, Accelerate earned a fees-paid berth for the Breeders' Cup Classic at Churchill Downs on Nov. 3.
Pavel, who won the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs in June, closed from fourth on the turn to finish second, followed by Prime Attraction, Roman Rosso, Dr. Dorr, The Lieutenant and Two Thirty Five.
Accelerate has won 8 of 20 starts and earned $2,312,480. The Pacific Classic was his richest win and his seventh stakes win.
