Del Mar: Mercer Islands lands first leg of rich pick five

Mercer Island ($11.20) held off 5-2 favorite Point Piper to win a $32,000 claimer at a mile on turf in Sunday's first race, the opening leg of a 50-cent pick five that drew a record pool of $5,056,661.

Interest in the already popular bet soared with a carryover of $785,777 from Saturday's Pacific Clasisic program.
