Water was back on at Del Mar racetrack early Tuesday morning after an outage Monday afternoon caused by an issue with a main line in the city of Del Mar.
The initial focus of the on-track recovery was the stable area, where horses and people who reside in residential quarters there were the most in immediate need. Efforts to ramp up water pressure on the frontside were to come later Tuesday, according to Josh Rubinstein, the track's president and chief operating officer.
"The feedback we have this morning is we're back on the original water lines from the city of Del Mar," Rubinstein said. "There was a break in the main water line. We're slowly ramping up the pressure. Everything should be back to normal."
Horsemen on Tuesday morning roundly praised the contingency plans Del Mar track management put into action in the event the water did not come back quickly, those efforts including having water trucks go through the stable area late Monday filling up any available bucket, and bringing in porta-potties.
"They got right on it," trainer Ron Ellis said.
"It was only down for a few hours," said trainer Gary Mandella. "They were right on top of it."
Del Mar was fortunate that the incident happened on a dark day, with another dark day to finish repairs. Bathrooms in the grandstand had water shut off Monday afternoon owing to the main line break.
"Can you imagine if it would have happened Saturday?" Rubinstein said, referring to the day of the Pacific Classic.
