Quick look, Wednesday at Del Mar …
Race 1 – Despite six straight second- or third-place finishes including three as the beaten favorite, Siberian Iris (1) looks tough in this N1X turf marathon. Trust her? Nope. Second choice Indian Mantuana (6) and 5-1 War Moccasin (2) are reasonable alternatives.
Race 2 – Jefe (1) has been begging for two turns, the 2-year-old Curlin colt is favored in the first dirt route of the year for So Cal juveniles. Keith Desormeaux trains Jefe, third to Roadster last out. Blinkers-off Dark Prince (4) is likely to set the pace, could get brave.
Race 3 – A maiden facing winners, Tiz Toffee (6) enters this starter allowance sprint with an 80 Beyer that is the field’s top fig. Lovely Raquel (2) romped in her comeback 20 days ago. She fits if able to run two alike wheeling back on relatively short notice.
Race 4 – Maiden 2yo fillies sprint on turf, Data Storm Kitty (3) finished far clear of third her only start in May. First-timer Candura (8) reportedly is quick, and so is second-timer Diosa (7). Mo Me Mo My (1), by Uncle Mo, has shown ability in workouts. She is 8-1.
Race 5 – Likely scratches from this maiden-20 sprint are Cheyenne Dancer and Tengs Rhythm. Program favorite Belle Monte (10) looks like the one to catch.
Race 6 – Thermopolis (3) and Save Ground (1), sharp maiden winner and Cal-bred N1X runner-up, are the principals in this Cal-bred N1X turf mile. California Journey (8) is “live” at 12-1 off tough trips (pace and/or wide trips). He might be worth a longshot flyer.
Race 7 – Mubtaahij is expected to scratch from this $75k dirt mile, leaving Grecian Fire (5), Soi Phet (3) and Dabster (1) as top contenders listed in order of preference.
Race 8 – Don’t Stalk Me (7), claimed from a big win and up class wheeling back in 11 days for trainer Ron Ellis, could give apprentice jockey Edgar Payeras his first Del Mar victory. He entered the card 0-for-42.
Summary, potential overlays: Mo Me Mo My, race 4; California Journey, race 6.
