Drayden Van Dyke, who tied a track record with seven wins on Sunday, won with his first mount on Wednesday aboard Gunmetal Gray in a maiden race for 2-year-olds at a mile.
Gunmetal Gray, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, pulled clear in early stretch to win by a convincing 6 3-4 lengths in 1:38.60.
By Exchange Rate, Gunmetal Gray ($13.60) had his second start on Wednesday. The colt was fifth in a wel-regarded maiden race at six furlongs on July 29.
From this race, it would be no surprise of Hollendorfer chose to run Gunmetal Gray in the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes at 1 1-16 miles at Santa Anita on Sept. 29, a $300,000 race formerly known as the FrontRunner Stakes.
Van Dyke has a two-win lead in the jockey standings. His next mount is Candura (8) in the fourth race, for maiden 2-year-old fillies at five furlongs on turf.
