Jockey Heriberto Figueroa was expected to go to a local hospital for a precautionary checkup on Wednesday evening after he was unseated from Joejoe's Kingdom (1) shortly after the start of the day's eighth race.
Joejoe's Kingdom, a 3-year-old gelding, jumped a temporary rail on the backtretch shortly after the start of the six-furlong race. Figueroa fell heavily and received attention from ambulance personnel.
Approximately 15 minutes after the race, Figueroa was in the track's first aid department. Figueroa's agent, Nelson Arroyo, said he planned to take the jockey to the emergency room as a precaution.
An apprentice who claims five pounds, Figueroa, 18, has had an outstanding first season at Del Mar. Through Wednesday, he was fourth in the standings with 18 wins. Drayden Van Dyke led the standings with 28 wins. Figueroa tied for the riding title at the Los Alamitos summer meeting with fellow apprentice jockey Assael Espinoza.
Joejoe's Kingdom, an 11-1 chance, ran loose after the incident and was caught by an outrider.
