Del Mar: slow surface benefits closers?

The Del Mar main track played inordinately slow the first two races Thursday; both winners rallied wide from off the pace.

Race-1 winner Spectacular Move ($13.40) rallied from behind, seven-wide into the lane, to win the $25k claiming sprint for 3-year-old fillies in a laborious 1:12.06. Over a “normal” surface, the time would have been about 1:11.70.

Race-2 winner Brookes All Mine ($12.80) rallied four-wide to win the $12,500 claiming sprint for fillies and mares in an arduous 1:12.27. over a “normal” surface, the time would have been about 1:11.60.

Bettors that like come-from-behind runners in the remaining dirt races Thursday are in good shape. Bettors that preferred inside speed might want to temper enthusiasm over the peculiar racing surface.

Race 3 is a turf sprint; the remaining dirt races are races 4, 6 (route) and 8.
