BUCCHERO, the 3-1 favorite in a field of 11 3yos and upward, overtook front-running ROCKET HEAT inside the furlong pole and went on to win the 22nd running of the G2, $200,000 Woodford on the Keeneland turf by a half-length over late-closing WILL CALL. Fernando De La Cruz was aboard for trainer Tim Glyshaw and owners Ironhorse Racing Stable in becoming the fourth horse to win the Woodford twice, having won this race last year at 26-1.
The full order was 2-10-4-11-7.
Bucchero, a 6yo Indiana-bred, finished 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.04 over a turf course rated good.
The Woodford is the only stakes of the three-day FallStars Weekend that does not carry a Win and You're In designation toward the Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs, but Glyshaw said Bucchero "definitely" will run in the Nov. 3 BC Turf Sprint nonetheless.
The Woodford led off the all-graded-stakes pick 5 (R6-10), which drew $619,106 in handle, far more than the $250,000 pool guarantee.
Byron King will have the full recap of the Woodford before too long on www.drf.com.
Next up: the G2 TCA Stakes (R7), which starts the late pick-4 (R7-10) with a $350k pool guarantee.
