Sitting a dream trip under Tyler Gaffalione, Next Shares closed up the inside under Tyler Gaffalione to score a 3 1/4-length victory over 81-1 longshot Great Wide Open in the Grade 1, $1 Million Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland on a stakes-filled Saturday afternoon.
His victory at 23-1, followed by the runner-up and 8-1 Qurbaan, set up some sizable payoffs. The winner returned $48.80 for $2, the exacta paid $984.10 for $1, and trifecta came back $3,878 for 50 cents.
Favored Analyze It was fourth, one of the few favorites in the race that offered any kind of serious stretch bid.
The Shadwell was the second straight victory from Next Shares, who had won the Old Friends a start earlier at Kentucky Downs. Richard Baltas trains the winner, who raced a mile on good turf in 1:36.97.
Marty McGee will have a full write up on the race shortly at DRF.com.
