CURRENT ($11.80) gave Jose Ortiz his third winner on this Sunday card when earning an automatic berth into the Nov. 2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf by nipping HENLEY'S JOY on the wire in a thrilling 28th running of the G3, $250,000 Bourbon Stakes on the Keeneland turf. SALVATOR MUNDI also was part of a photo finish when 3rd in a field of 13 2yos, while WAR OF WILL, the 7-5 favorite, faded to fourth, beaten less than a length for it all, after setting the pace from the start. The full order was 10-3-8-1.
Current is trained by Todd Pletcher for the Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Robert LaPenta. The Curlin colt finished the 1 1/16-mile distance in 1:45.10 over a turf course rated firm. He was coming off a maiden win at Belmont Park.
Nicole Russo will have the full Bourbon recap up before long on www.drf.com.
