Metropol, a first-time starter by Shackleford, caught pacesetter Street Image in the final strides to give trainer Bob Baffert yet another win in a maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds in Monday's second race.
Metropol ($3.40) ran 6 1-2 furlongs in 1:17.56 under jockey Drayden Van Dyke. The race drew only four runners after Baffert withdrew morning-line favorite Coliseum, a Tapit colt, because of illness, he said on Monday morning.
Baffert has had a strong season with 2-year-olds, led by Game Winner who won the Del Mar Futurity and American Pharoah Stakes in his last two starts and is the leading contender for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs on Nov. 2.
