A storm that brought rain, along with thunder and lightning, stretching from San Diego to Los Angeles forced the closure of the main track at Santa Anita on Saturday morning, a day when a number of horses preparing for the Breeders' Cup, including Classic contenders Accelerate and West Coast, were scheduled to have workouts.
With the main track closed, training was confined to the training track, and only a handful of horses were scheduled to work on it.
The main track was sealed. As of 6:45 am, it was still lightly raining. In regards to Saturday afternoon's races, look for updates on main track condition, and the status of grass course races, later this morning. There also figure to be scratches owing to the weather.
John Sadler, the trainer of Accelerate, said he would work Sunday, a morning he also has his outstanding Dirt Mile runner, Catalina Cruiser, scheduled to work.
West Coast now will go Sunday, a day when McKinzie is also scheduled to work. Both are trained by Bob Baffert.
Saturdays and Sundays are far and away the busiest mornings for workouts at Santa Anita. With all of Saturday's works being postponed unitl Sunday, Sunday morning should be insanely busy, not just for Breeders' Cup runners, but the horse population here in general.
