Santa Anita Saturday preview: “wet-fast,” off turf

The track is labelled “wet fast” as of 10:40 a.m. All five races scheduled for turf (1, 3, 5, 8, 10) have been moved to a sealed main track. Preview …

Race 1 – Just Kidding (2) benefits by the surface switch; he could go favored rather than the low-figure dropper Popyhowuspelcupcak (6). The latter would be a bet-against at low odds. Front-runner Elwood J (8) could make the lead; he won his only start on “wet.”

Race 2 – We Will Re Joyce (4), winner four of her last six, is obvious chalk in this claiming sprint for 3yo fillies. However, the best gamble might be Ciao Luna (5). She has speed, a wet-track pedigree, and is listed at 12-1.

Race 3 – Scheduled for the hill, this $25k claiming N2L filly-mare sprint will be run at six and a half on dirt. Class-drop favorites Gone to Town (5) and Copper Fever (6) are logical. Pass race.

Race 4 – Another Bob Baffert-trained 2-year-old at a short price, fast-working Cruel Intention (2) is odds-on. Baffert is 11-for-13 this year with 2yo firsters that are favored. Spendaholic (4) broke slowly in his debut, raced greenly, finished with run and galloped out super.

Race 5 – Small field in this off-turf Cal-bred N1X at one mile. How many lengths will Tapitha Bonita (1) improve first start off the claim by Bill Spawr? Pick a number. She won her only wet-track start by eight lengths. With several scratches, Tapitha Bonita could be a short price.

Race 7 – First-time starter Absolutely Perfect (7) worked fast for her debut; her rivals main rivals are Paprika (4) and program favorite Coco Kisses (3). Those two are a combined 0-for-12.

Race 8 – The $100k California Distaff Handicap moves from five furlongs turf, to five furlongs on the main track. Love a Honeybadger (10) will set the pace, Meet and Greet (5) will be in pursuit. Sure hope this Cal-bred filly-mare stake returns to six and a half on the hill next fall.

Race 10 – At least half the field scratched in this N1X filly-mare sprint that moves from the hill, to six and a half on the main track. Lightning Dove (6) and Snaked (13) both were 20-1 prior to surface changes and scratches. Now, they look like the top contenders.

First post Saturday, 12:30.
