Fields are small Saturday at Santa Anita. Wager accordingly. Preview …
Race 1 – The last-out win by Above Board (6) was validated Friday when third place Sense of Glory won with an 81 Beyer. Above Board looks tough in this $8k claiming mile.
Race 2 – Save Ground (6) also looks tough, in this Cal-bred N1X turf mile. Runner-up as the favorite two straight vs. similar, he is favored again. The Street Fighter (2), by good turf sire Street Boss, tries grass for the first time. Upset potential at 6-1.
Race 3 – Two sports, two questions. Will Los Angeles Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw pitch again this season, or will the Dodgers season end tonight in Game 7 of the NLCS in Milwaukee? Second question regards Kershaw (1) the stretch-out gelding: can he get two turns? Predictions: Kershaw will pitch again, and the horse will carry his speed in this starter allowance mile. Must admit, it might be wishful thinking on both accounts.
Race 4 – Wild Verse (7) at 9-5? That would be an epic overlay. He drops to maiden-20, gets off the rail, and appears to be a standout in the odds range of even-money.
Race 5 – Unless he wins the California Flag Handicap at five furlongs on turf, Richard’s Boy (4) has no business in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint two weeks from today. Richard’s Boy is odds-on in the California Flag, facing legit rivals Tribalist (1) and Eddie Haskell (5). This handicapper will not bet on, or against, Richard’s Boy. Pasadena.
Race 6 – Baby Ice (3) at 5-2 is high enough in this N2L claiming sprint. Her maiden-20 win last out crushes. Baby Ice could go favored, rather than Sharona Sunset (5).
Race 7 – Another low-odds overlay? Fairy Tale Bliss (2) ran well in her fifth-place debut against maidens. She ran faster on the same card-distance-surface than favorite Posh Holly (8), who was fourth in a stakes. This handicapper will be pleasantly surprised if Fairy Tale Bliss starts close to her 4-1 program price. That would be too good to be true.
Race 8 – The only knock on favorite Ninety Nine Proof (1) is the inside post. But is it really a knock? Four of the 12 dirt races this meet at six and a half were won from the rail.
Race 9 – First-time starters Storm River (1) and Volubile (8) are siblings to debut winners, both trained well for this maiden downhill sprint. Vantastic (5) is favored off an okay runner-up debut, but the firsters are well-meant.
