City of Light, likely headed to the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile on Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs, continued his strong workout pattern with a five-furlong move at Santa Anita on Saturday morning that was timed in 59 seconds and was the fastest of 40 at the distance.
"He's trained wonderfully up to this point. That was more of what we've been seeing all along. I'm very excited to lead him over," said his trainer, Michael McCarthy.
McCarthy said City of Light could be cross-entered at pre-entry time on Monday in the Breeders' Cup Classic in addition to the Dirt Mile.
McCarthy also could have Axelrod in the Classic. The Pennsylvania Derby runner-up went five furlongs in 1:01 on Saturday.
"He worked great today," McCarthy said.
McCarthy has five runners currently pointing to the Breeders' Cup, and all five worked today. In addition to City of Light and Axelrod, he also put five-furlong works into Liam the Charmer (1:01.40, goes in Turf), Paved (1:01.40 for the Filly and Mare Turf), and Vibrance (1:00.40 for the Juvenile Fillies). Liam the Charmer and Paved worked alongside one another.
