UNION STRIKE, winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante as a 2-year-old of 2016 and more recently the winner of the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom at Belmont Park, was not pre-entered for the Nov. 3 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Churchill Downs, owner Mick Ruis Sr. said Tuesday. Instead, the filly has been retired because of what Ruis described as "a minor issue" and will be bred in February to Bolt d'Oro.
"She's fine, but she's far too valuable as a broodmare to go any farther with her," said Ruis.
Union Strike, a 4-year-old filly by Union Rags, won the Sept. 23 Gallant Bloom by a half-length over YOUR LOVE, who also is not expected to pre-enter the Filly-Mare Sprint.
Union Strike won 3 times from 11 starts for earnings of $537,625. She was trained at the outset of her career by Ruis' daughter, Shelbe, for whom she won the Del Mar Debutante in her second start. She then was trained by Craig Dollase for 2 starts; then for 5 starts by Ruis himself; then for her last 2 starts by Steve Asmussen, who still is expected to have MIA MISCHIEF for the Filly-Mare Sprint.
Pre-entries for all 14 Breeders' Cup races will be announced Wednesday at Churchill at 11:30 a.m. ET.
