The Breeders' Cup Distaff has "just" 12 pre-entries, but what it lacks in quantity, it makes up for in serious quality. Seven of those are Grade 1 winners, led by Kentucky Oaks winners Abel Tasman and Monomoy Girl, both looking to rebound from recent mishaps.
Abel Tasman won the Kentucky Oaks and finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff en route to a divisional Eclipse Award last year, and has returned to be a multiple Grade 1 winner this season. However, she burned bridge jumpers when finishing a surprising fifth last out in the Grade 1 Zenyatta Stakes, when she may have been fighting off a virus that was going through trainer Bob Baffert's barn.
Meanwhile, the younger Monomoy Girl won four consecutive Grade 1 races for trainer Brad Cox, taking the Ashland Stakes, Kentucky Oaks, Acorn Stakes, and Coaching Club American Oaks. She was disqualified to second in what would have been a fifth straight Grade 1, in last month’s Cotillion Stakes, for interference in the stretch.
Here's the complete list of pre-entries for the Distaff, in alphabetical order:
Abel Tasman, Blue Prize, Champagne Problems, Fuhriously Kissed (first preference Filly and Mare Turf), La Force, Midnight Bisou, Monomoy Girl, Mopotism (second preference Filly and Mare Sprint), Vale Dori, Verve's Tale, Wonder Gadot, Wow Cat
In addition to Abel Tasman and Monomoy Girl, Blue Prize, La Force, Midnight Bisou, Vale Dori, and Wow Cat are the Grade 1 winners; Champagne Problems, Mopotism, Verve's Tale, and Wonder Gadot are all graded stakes winners, while Fuhriously Kissed is graded-placed.
Cross-entered Mopotism is likely to wind up here, as the Filly and Mare Sprint is well-oversubscribed with 18 pre-entrants. There are 15 pre-entered in the Filly and Mare Turf, but some have first preference elsewhere, meaning Fuhriously Kissed is likely to be able to pick her spot when final entries close next Monday.
