An overflow field of 19 was pre-entered in the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic Nov. 3, the richest and last of the 14 BC races to be run at Churchill Downs on Nov. 2 and 3.
A maximum of 14 can run. So, there are currently five on the outside looking in.
The 14 in the main body of the race are Accelerate, Axelrod, Catholic Boy, City of Light, Discreet Lover, Lone Sailor, McKinzie, Mendelssohn, Mind Your Biscuits, Pavel, Roaring Lion, Thunder Snow, West Coast, and Yoshida.
Currently outside the top 14 are, in order of preference, Bravazo, Gunnevera, Seeking the Soul, Collected, and Toast of New York.
City of Light is listed as having the Dirt Mile as his first preference and is expected to go there. In addition, Bravazo is listed as having the Dirt Mile as his first preference. If all that holds at the time of final entries on Monday, Gunnevera would get in.
There are up to two also-eligibles allowed at entry time on Monday. If there are no other unforeseen developments in the Classic between now and then, Seeking the Soul would be the first AE. However, Seeking the Soul was also pre-entered in the Dirt Mile. That is his second preference, but he is the main body of that race already and thus is guaranteed a spot there if he can't get into the Classic.
Horses can only enter one race on Monday, so if Seeking the Soul would be an AE for the Classic and guaranteed a spot in the Dirt Mile, his connections would have to decide then which way to play it; they would have until Nov. 2 at 8 am Eastern to draw in from the AE list. Many miles to travel until then.
Accelerate is the 3-1 favorite for the Classic on the current set by Mike Watchmaker, Daily Racing Form's national handicapper.
