Accelerate landed the outside post in a full field of 14 when posts were drawn on Monday for the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Saturday at Churchill Downs, a race that should be one of the highlights of the weekend, what with a large field of top contenders coming from the United States and Europe.
There were 16 put in the field at entry time. A maximum of 14 can run, so Collected and Toast of New York were placed on the also-eligible list, in that order. They must get in by scratch time on Friday at 8 am Eastern or they cannot run.
Seeking the Soul could have been the first also-eligible, but because horses cannot enter two races on the same card his connections opted to take the sure thing of the Dirt Mile. Had he entered the Classic he would have been one defection away from running, but if he didn't get in he would have missed the event entirely.
Mike Battaglia, the morning-line maker at Churchill Downs, has Accelerate the 5-2 favorite, with West Coast next at 5-1. They were one-two last month in the Awesome Again at Santa Anita.
McKinzie and Mind Your Biscuits are the co-third choices at 6-1, followed by Catholic Boy at 8-1.
The field, from the rail out, is:
Thunder Snow, Christophe Soumillon the rider, 12-1 morning line
Roaring Lion, Oisin Murphy, 20-1
Catholic Boy, Javier Castellano, 8-1
Gunnevera, Irad Ortiz Jr., 20-1
