Anthony Van Dyck draws poorly for @breederscup Juvenile Turf

The $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf is a level-weights race with every horse assigned to carry 122 pounds, but they gave the best horse a handicap when post positions were drawn Monday in downtown Louisville.

Anthony Van Dyck, a multiple graded-stakes winner and twice Group 1-placed while facing some of the best 2-year-old turf horses in Europe, couldn’t have drawn any worse for the Juvenile Turf, a one-mile race with a short run into the first turn, landing post 14. Anthony Van Dyck still was installed as the 4-1 morning-line favorite and figures to be shorter than that given his glittering record and internationally famous connections, trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Ryan Moore. O’Brien has won the Juvenile Turf four times already and with a second in the Group 1 National Stakes and a third in the Grade 1 Dewhurst in his last two starts, Anthony Van Dyck has the clear credentials to make it five. Even so he will need plenty of luck to score from such a deleterious draw.

Current and Forty Under, winners respectively of the Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland and the Pilgrim at Belmont, are co-5-1 second choices on the line. Current, trained by previous Juvenile Turf winner Todd Pletcher, also drew poorly in post 12, while Forty Under, who has worked over the Churchill grass course, has a good draw in post 4.

Uncle Benny’s connections chose the Juvenile Turf over the Juvenile Turf Sprint and Uncle Benny, a likely pace factor, will begin his two-turn debut from post 2.

Line of Duty looks a live chance at a square price from post 5 for Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby, winners of this race in 2013 with Outstrip.
