The lone grass race run so far was dominated by front-runners, and even though the course took a lot of water the last two days, the winner of the BC Turf Sprint, Bulletin, had made his lone start on firm ground at Gulfstream, so either he's very adaptable to the conditions, or the course is firmer than one would have expected.
The course profile can't be determined off one 5 1/2-furlong sprint, but it bears watching to see if front-runners have similar success in the upcoming Juvenile Fillies Turf, and whether firm ground runners won't be hindered.
Newspaperofrecord (6) is the deserved and overwhelming favorite in this race based on her two wins, both on ground rated yielding at Saratoga and then Belmont. It's hard to get past her. She will be forwardly placed, and the ground should not be a bother to her. But 2-5 is tough to take on anything, so if you can beat her, you'll be rewarded, and even filling out the gimmicks if you can get prices behind her can be enriching.
I thought Concrete Rose (1) ran a terrific race in her last at Keeneland. With 20 MTP she is 8-1 and the only horse under 13-1 besides the favorite.
Just Wonderful (4) has form overseas that looks compromised on yielding ground, but considering how Bulletin got over the ground in the first BC race -- and that this filly teams Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore -- her 19-1 is more than attractive.
I'm taking a stand against the horses exiting the Natalma, in which La Pelosa (5) was first and My Gal Betty (13) second. I have doubts about the quality of that field overall. If they win, I lose.
