Jockey Ryan Moore, a Grade- and Group-1 winning jockey the world over, just rode Sergei Prokofiev to an unplaced finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. Watch Sergei Prokofiev's last race and you can see what an amazing turn of foot this colt has. Today. Moore asked him for run and Sergei Prokofiev spun his wheels.
In fact, that was the case with pretty much everyone in the Juvenile Turf Sprint: Running position barely meaningfully changed in the homestretch, and that is not like a typical turf race.
"You could see it was hard for anyone to make up ground," Moore said, walking back after talking to trainer Aidan O'Brien.
The Churchill course is officially designated as "good" today, and indeed, walking over the surface of the ground it does not feel that bad. But Moore said he would term the course "soft." Asked if the characterition of the going offered this morning by English trainer John Gosden - who called the course "loose" -- was accurate, Moore said "yes."
Also worth noting was that the winner and runner-up stuck to the 3 and 4 path while the only late-stretch movement came on the far outside. That accords with the way the course felt this morning, namely softer nearer the hedge than outside.
