Bellafina will have to overcome the extreme outside post and a drying out Churchill Downs main track when she meets nine opponents in Friday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.
There is a short run into the first turn of this 1 1-16-mile race and jockey Flavien Prat will most likely have to use Bellafina’s speed to attain a good position going into the first turn. Bellafina will most likely not make the early lead with the presence of Vibrance _ whom Bellafina beat handily in the Grade 1 Chandelier _ Jaywalk, dominant winner of the Grade 1 Frizette at Belmont, and Serengetti Empress, a 19 1-2 length winner of Pocahontas Stakes here on Sept. 15.
For me, I’m looking for a closer and the two I’m zeroing in on are Sippican Harbor and Restless Rider, the 1-2 finishers from the Grade 1 Spinaway at Saratoga.
Was expecting Sippican Harbor to be overlooked, but I guess not as she sits at 5-1 right now. Sippican Harbor finished fifth in her debut on turf. She came back with a 17-length off-the-turf maiden win at Saratoga and then rallied from last, outfinishing Restless Rider to win the Grade 1 Spinaway.
Restless Rider, who was returning from a two-month layoff in the Spinaway, came back to win the Grade 1 Alcibiades at Keeneland.
Meanwhile, Sippican Harbor has been simply trained up to this race by Gary Contessa, who had a fabulous Belmont fall meet with 19 winners. Sippican Harbor has had some visually impressive workouts at Belmont Park and Contessa is one of the few trainers who is not afraid to work them seven furlongs or a mile.
Yes, Joel Rosario took off this horse to ride Jaywalk, but Irad Ortiz Jr. is a fine replacement.
Jaywalk is certainly dangerous for John Servis off her eye-catching victory in the Frizette.
