Stormy Liberal runs down World of Trouble to win BC Turf Sprint again

Stormy Liberal, under Drayden Van Dyke, ran down World of Trouble, Irad Ortiz Jr. up, to win the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint by a neck at Churchill Downs.

It was the second straight year Stormy Liberal won this race as he defeated stablemate Richard’s Boy by a head last year. It was also the fourth consecutive win this year for Stormy Liberal, all by a nose, head or neck.

It was 7 1-4 lengths back to Disco Partner in third.

World of Trouble, sent off the 2-1 favorite had to outrun Havana Grey in a first quarter run in 22.50 seconds over yielding turf to get the lead.

Stormy Liberal, fourth early, moved into third entering the far turn and was second at the top of the lane. World of Trouble fought Stormy Liberal as best he could before giving way late.

Stormy Liberal, a 6-year-old gelding by Stormy Atlantic owned by Gary Hartunian’s Rockingham Ranch Stable and David Bernsen, covered the 5 1-2 furlongs in 1:04.05 and returned $16.
