Thoughts on the Turf Sprint and the condition of Churchill's turf course

It wasn't the richest Breeders' Cup race run so far, but in terms of sheer entertainment value, Stormy Liberal and World of Trouble made for one of the most exciting ones so far when they just threw it down in the $1 million Turf Sprint.

Stormy Liberal got the decision by a neck, but his will to win is absolutely remarkable. That's four straight wins for him, the other three by margins of a nose, a nose, and a head. Oh yes, Stormy Liberal also won last year's Turf Sprint at Del Mar by - wait for it - a head.

The real point of this note, aside from a tip of the hat to Stormy Liberal and a game World of Trouble, is to suggest that you not let the running time of 1:04.05 make you think the condition of the turf course is better than it really is. They were digging up huge clods during the running, and it looked like Richard's Boy, after pressing the pace, fell into quicksand in upper stretch.

I believe the the time was so fast because Stormy Liberal and World of Trouble both simply ran out of their skin. That's also a big reason why there was a 7 1/4 length chasm back to Disco Partner in third, with another reason likely being many horses in the Turf Sprint just did not handle the going.
