Here are a few spot plays I like today at Del Mar:
Race 1: Zaffinah (8) is finally returning to two-turn racing after being fed a steady diet of sprints. At the price she's a worth a gamble. Her form is dirtied up enough that she'll be a bigger price than she should be IMO.
Race 6: I like that Hollendorfer is protecting Popular Kid (5) by using his allowance condition rather than run him for $40,000, even though he claimed him for $32,000 and could make a quick profit. When a Hall of Fame trainer manages a horse like that, he's telling you he likes what he acquired. A longshot for the gimmicks here is Bellerin (6), whose form I believe is masked. He won his first start after being gelded, then was off after his April 1 race for seven months, so obviously something went awry. His comeback race was on turf, not his best surface. Back on dirt, he can do better, and at a price.
Race 7: Pincheck (4) looks super live to me in his US debut in the Seabiscuit. His best races overseas were on good ground, so he should like the firm stuff here. His last two races were against terrific Group competition in Ireland. The fact that he never ran in Group 1 company is not a concern. He wasn't eligible to do so, being a gelding. He stays with Mandella after the race.
