Gray Attempt ($6.40) won his two-turn debut Friday in the $150,000 Smarty Jones, earning 10 eligibility points for the Kentucky Derby. The race was the opening-day feature at Oaklawn Park, where the estimated ontrack attendance was 20,000. Long Range Toddy was second and Boldor, third, in the Smarty Jones. .
Gray Attempt set fractions of 23.12 seconds for the opening quarter, 46.86 for the half-mile and 1:11.01 for six furlongs before winning the mile race that ended at the sixteenth pole in 1:36.94. The track was listed as fast.
Shaun Bridgmohan was aboard the winner for trainer Jinks Fires. Gray Attempt was coming off a victory in the Sugar Bowl at Fair Grounds.
