Trainer Peter Miller has scratched all 3 of his horses on the Pegasus World Cup card today at Gulfstream after the early races scheduled for turf were transferred by track officials to the main track. Most notably, STORMY LIBERAL, who was voted the 2018 turf champion Thursday night at the Eclipse Awards here, is out of the GP Turf Sprint (R3). The other two horses Miller brought here from his southern California base, SURRENDER NOW and PAINTING CORNERS, also have been scratched from the Ladies' Turf Sprint (R5).
"I'm not real happy about it," said Miller. "It's unbelievable, really. It's total disregard for the owners of these horses. We shipped these horses across the country to run in turf stakes, and this happens."
Rain is forecast for most of today. Races 1, 3, and 5 are off the turf, while four later stakes (races 6, 8, 10, 11) all are still on, as of 10:30 a.m. ET.
"It looks to me like the turf course is safer than the main track," which is rated sloppy, said Miller. "There's no standing water on the turf. I don't know why they would just pick and choose" which of the grass races stay on and which are off. "It's total disregard for the owners."
