Most people are focused on Gulfstream Park this afternoon, but the conditions and potential bias present make me a bit reluctant to go all-in. On the left coast, the early pick five at Santa Anita looks intriguing, as it features a few Sunshine Millions stakes races for Cal-breds. Here are a few horses to consider throughout the sequence.
RACE 1
- COMBAT ZONE (6) has had a number of opportunities to break his maiden, but he's fired fresh off the bench in the past and drops to the $50k maiden claiming level for the first time; if he can't get it done today, he may never get it done
RACE 2
- RUNNINGWSCISSORS (3) found the starter allowance company too tough to handle in his first start against winners; perhaps the drop to the open $25k claiming level today will be more to his liking
RACE 3 - CAL CUP TURF SPRINT
- LISTING (5) ran well in his first start going down-the-hill, and it can be argued that he ran the best race on January 1 given the fact that he was the first runner to move into the teeth of the pace
RACE 4 - CAL CUP SPRINT
- I've never been a big fan of TOUCHING RAINBOWS (6), but the move back to Cal-bred company could be just what he needs to get back to his best form; at a price, he's a must-use IMO
RACE 5
- LADY NINJA (1) has had her share of opportunites at the N1X level and hasn't been able to prevail, but her most recent effort was solid and her tactical speed could go a long way this afternoon
